Announcement

Join the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists and the Atlanta chapters of the Asian American Journalists Association and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists for the 2008 Pre-UNITY Reception this Thursday!

We will meet one month before the UNITY: Journalists of Color Convention, which will be in Chicago from July 23 and 27. This year marks the
14th anniversary of the inaugural UNITY Convention, held right here in Atlanta!

Whether you're planning to attend this year's UNITY or will be missing out on this year's gathering, come celebrate our continued collaboration as we prepare to head to the largest gathering of journalists of color -- an event that only happens once every four years!

We'll also be raising a glass to Atlanta's new NAHJ chapter.

Meet us at Canvas Art Bar, Castleberry Hill's newest hot spot. (Check out this inspiring space at www.canvasartbar.com.)

The event starts at 6:30 p.m., and admission is free for UNITY organization members. Non-member admission is only $10, or become a member at the door and save $10 on your membership!

Heavy hors d'oeuvres will be served and the first round of drinks is on us.

Hope to see you Thursday and in Chicago next month!

Our Chapter
Recognizing the dearth of minority journalists in local television, radio and print, a group of African-American reporters and photographers formed the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists in the fall of 1976. Part of the group's purpose was to collectively use its strength to push the mainstream media to diversify. Among AABJ's first projects were mentoring and scholarship programs. AABJ also sought to recognize groundbreaking professional journalists with its Pioneer Black Journalist Award and banquet. The first banquet was held in 1977 at the Butler Street YMCA's Hungry Club. In 1984, AABJ hosted the National Association of Black Journalists' national convention in Atlanta. Then U.S. presidential candidate Jesse Jackson was a guest speaker. A decade later, AABJ would host Unity '94, the first gathering of black, Asian, Hispanic and Native American journalists on record. .

How to Become a Member
AABJ's membership categories are the same as the membership categories of the National Association of Black Journalists. Membership in NABJ and membership in our chapter are paid separately, and you do not have to be a member of NABJ to join AABJ although we encourage you to do so.

All memberships in AABJ expire one year after they are activated. Memberships that are not renewed by the anniversary date are deemed expired. Read More...
