| On September 22, 2001, the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists (AABJ) celebrated its 25th anniversary by hosting the Pioneer Black Journalists Awards Gala. Along with awarding scholarships to journalism students, the event honored Pat Lottier, publisher of Atlanta Tribune: The Magazine, as Pioneer Journalist of the Year.
Since 1976, the AABJ has served as the collective voice of the city's African American media talent, representing hundreds of communications professionals in print, radio, television, public relations and new media. The AABJ recognizes the best and the brightest journalism professionals at the Pioneer Black Journalist Awards. Each year, the awards ceremony is attended by representatives from every major media outlet in the city as well as the corporate sponsors who support the scholarship fund.
